The Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization (JATSO) is preparing an update to the agency’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The LRTP serves as the blueprint for transportation improvement priorities for the metropolitan area including roadway and bridge, public transit, rail, aviation, freight, and bicycle/pedestrian.

A Long Range Transportation Plan plays an essential part in the development of any efficient transportation network. One of the single largest infrastructure investments that a community will make is their transportation system, which will ultimately affect all parts of community development therefore making a sound transportation system a necessity. In preparing the LRTP, JATSO will evaluate the current transportation infrastructure, address the current and future needs of the Joplin region, recognize and include the concerns and desires of the public and all stakeholders, and create a fiscally sound Long Range Transportation Plan.

Another strong component of the plan update is public involvement. Public input is essential in the overall development and ultimate success of the long-range transportation plan. In order for a plan to be successful, it should reflect the needs of the community. The plan must be prepared with the citizens, not for the citizens. Public meetings will be held at each jurisdiction prior to beginning the update of the long-range plan in order to understand and reflect the needs of the public. The project team will conduct these public meetings, and allow the public to comment on the transportation plans of the region. In addition, public meetings with major transportation users such as freight, transit, and business owners will be conducted to ensure that every perspective of transportation is evaluated.

We welcome your interest and encourage you to participate via this web portal and in the public meetings.
